Vrinsk heads strong Riccarton challenge at Kumara

By

ALEX McMILLAN

Vrinsk, a close last start second to Royal Sceptre in the Waikouaiti Cup on New Year’s Day, appears well placed to capture the rich Sweetman Corcoran Centennial Nuggets (2000 m the feature event and first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Kumara Racing Club’s annual meeting at Kumara tomorrow. The Bandmaster II five-year-old, formerly trained

at Mosgiel by Di Bowbyes, has performed honestly without winning a race since joining the Riccarton stable of Dave Kerr late last year and although opposed by some very talented rivals in tomorrow’s $17,500 event has three factors very much in his favour. The gelding appreciates wet ground (the Kumara track promises to be soft at least), he races handy to the pace, and appears very well

weighted with 51.5 kg. Vrinsk will be ridden tomorrow by the Riccarton apprentice, Jackie Oakeshott, who partnered Cahir to victory in atrocious conditions last year. Grant Davison was offered the ride on Vrinsk but elected to continue his association with Blovinski when that Riccarton four-year-old very impressively won the Reefton Cup on Wednesday. Blovinski promises to be

a big threat to Vrinsk in the Nuggets, despite a wide draw.

Blyme and, if she starts, In the Glen will further enhance the prospect of a Riccarton trained winner in tomorrow’s feature. Blyme returned an excellent trial for this assignment when fourth against the sprinters at Reefton on Wednesday, while In the Glen has been in splendid form in recent weeks, win-

ning the Miss Scenicland at Hokitika, the Christmas Handicap at Riccarton (beating Royal Sceptre) and the Timaru Cup at Washdyke (beating Canterbury Belle). A start will depend on the condition of the track, for, although the mare’s trainer, Garth Jackson, is pleased with her progress since Timaru, he is reluctant to start her in heavy ground with a 58kg top weight.

If Riccarton stables are to be denied success, Royal Adder, from the Orari stable of Ray Pankhurst seems the most likely “upsetter.”

Sound Note, an improvers’ second over 1400 m at Reefton on Wednesday is ideally drawn to go one better in the 1100 m Connors and Blackmore Flying Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double.

Thornley 55.0 Has disappointed since close second to Samasaan at Washdyke last month but soft track will enhance her chances here. 4 2918 Cappiemore 11 54.0 Impressive highweight winner at Riccarton last month but failed dismally in Reefton Cup on Wednesday. 5 0057 Frontline 3 D. Place chance. 13 1411 Blovinski 15 G. Davison 52.0 Promising young stayer which was very impressive in winning the Reefton Cup on Wednesday. Jamieson 51.5 Faded out after pacemaking over 1400 m at Reefton on Wednesday. This distance will suit better. 7 4372 Sound Note 1 C.
