Waiau Karting
Derek Wilson was close to unbeatable in the Christchurch Kart Club’s street racing meeting at Waiau, North Canterbury, on Saturday. Wilson drove his ageing aircooled 250 cu cm Yamahapowered machine to victory in the 10-lap grand prix, pipping at the post the less powerful 100 cu cm karts of Grant Clearwater and Shane Drake. He also won the kilometrelong hill climb, averaging almost lOOkm/h. Jim Rouse’s 250 cu cm Rotax superkart provided excitment with its high speeds in the straights before it was sidelined by mechanical problems. The 100 cu cm Yamaha class saw very close competition in three events with three different winners — Clearwater, Drake, and Carl Blanchett. Drivers had to contend with lifting tar seal caused by the high temperatures. This was solved by calling in the local fire brigade to hose down the road.
