Hesitant win to Wellington

PA Gisborne Wellington, not without a fair measure of tribulation at the start of its second innings, gained a valuable outright win over Northern Districts by four wickets at Gisborne yesterday. Faced with a target of only 90 after dismissing Northern for 208 in its second innings, Wellington suddenly found itself in trouble at 35 for four. But then Evan Gray joined Andrew Jones and with a partnership of 47, the pair set up the Wellington win. Wellington lost Ross Ormiston on eight, its captain, Robert Vance, on 25, and Justin Boyle, the victim of smart fielding by David White, on 31. Then when Tim Ritchie was lbw to Steve Scott without scoring, Northern was back in the game; but Gray, seeing attack as the best solution, righted the Wellington chase with 26 runs off only 29 balls. Jones played a quieter role but his was an intelligent innings and he deserved to hit the winning runs. NORTHERN DISTRICTS First innings 199 Second innings L. Crocker c Larsen b
