Middle East conflict
Sir,—The recent strikes in Rome and Vienna once again set in motion the circle of counter-strike and strike in the Middle East. We in the West are conditioned to take the side of Israel in its disputes with its neighbours and its indigenous populations, but we should consider how we would feel if we had an alien people foisted upon us — a people who considered us racially inferior to them; a people who have built the world’s largest arsenal solely to survive in a hostile environment, and a people who would be driven into the sea if it were not for the vast financial, military and trade aid of the United States. The real terrorists are Israel and the United States because their combined attempts to crush the Palestinians’ legitimate claims have resulted in desperate acts (Rome and Vienna) because of a desperate need for recognition. — Yours, etc., GRAEME YARDLEY. January 4, 1986.
