Lead in speedway extended
PA Wellington The American, John Cook, increased his over-all lead in the Ivan Mauger champion world speedway series after first and second placings at Nelson and Cromwell.
The Englishman, Simon Wigg, headed Cook home at Cromwell on Friday, but the American returned to winning form on Saturday night winning the tenth round final at Nelson.
Mauger was placed fifth at Nelson after failing to make the Cromwell final the previous night Results:— Cromwell (Friday):—Final.— Simon Wigg (U.K.) 1; John Cook (U.S.) 2; Bobby Schwartz (U.S.) 3; Neil Evitts (U.K.) 4; Juha Mocksunen (Finland) 5; Larry Ross (N.Z.) 6. Nelson (Saturday): Final.— Cook 1; Ross 2; Evitts 3; Moksunen 4; Ivan Mauger (N.Z.) 5; Kim Mauger (N.Z.) 6. Record attendance. Kim’s footrest broke in the final. Over-all scores after 11 rounds: Cook 108, Wigg 66, Mauger 64, Ross 61, Swartz 55, Evitts 51, Moxsunen 47, Einar Kyllingstad (Norway) 40, Olli Tyrvainen (Finland) 37, Ryszard Franczysszyn (Poland) 10, Grzegriz Dzikowski (Poland) 7, David Bargh (N.Z.) 7, Larry Ayres (U.K.) 7, Kim Mauger 6. The next rounds are at Gisborne on January 4, Dunedin on January 11, Christchurch on January 12, Wanganui on January 18. The final meeting will be at Auckland in February.
