Convincing victory

PA Mount Maunganui A Californian driver, Jeff McPherson, convincingly

won the opening round of the international Formula Mondial series at Mount Maunganui’s Baypark Raceway yesterday, establishing himself as the man to beat in next week-end’s New Zealand Grand Prix.

After an intense early challenge from his teammate, Paul Radisich, of New Zealand, McPherson drew clear in the latter

stages of the 57-lap race to win by more than 300 metres. Third home, nearly half a lap behind was another American, Gray Bren, then a veteran Aucklander, Ken Smith, who came out on top after a race-long duel with a Californian, Ted Prappas. The only other driver to complete the race without stopping was Australia’s sole entry, Bob Creasey, two laps behind in sixth place.
