U.S. retains supremacy
NZPA-Reuter Paris The United States swept into a second decade of world supremacy in men’s athletics this year, according to a survey published yesterday by the French sports newspaper “L’Equipe.”
An analysis of world best performances in 24 track and field events in 1985 said the Americans had increased their lead over the Soviet Union with East Germany a distant third.
The top two places have been unchanged in L’Equipe’s” annual polls since 1975, while East Germany has been ousted from third only twice, both times by its West German rivals. Leading 1985 platings are: United States 1406.5 points (first last year), 1; Soviet Union 829.5 (2), 2; East Germany 388 (3), 3; Britain 367 (4), 4. West Germany 261.5 (6), 5; Poland 239.5 (9), 6; Cuba 164.5 (13), 7; Czechoslovakia 158.5 (8), 8; Italy 151 (5), 9; France 129 (10), 10.
