Portable radio tax reinstated

Wellington reporter Portable radios and tape decks are among imported goods that are not now subject to the sweeping tariff cuts introduced by the Government yesterday. These items and 40 others have been removed from the list of 500 identified under the Government’s economic package last week.

The goods have been removed because it has been found that they are also produced in New Zealand. Portable radios and headphone radios will continue to attract a normal tariff rate of 65 per cent, and not become duty free from all import sources, as had been

announced. Other consumer items to be removed from the list include artists’ brushes, cufflinks and perfume. Many other consumer items, and manufacturing components, stay on the list and have had their tariff either wiped or reduced substantially. A Customs Department official confirmed yesterday that the tariff cuts on some of these goods may still be reversed as more domestic producers notify the Government that they are also manufactured here.

The economic package was not intended to remove protection from any New Zealand companies.
