Sales ‘flop’ retired
NZPA-Reuter Arundel, England Snaafi Dancer, the JUSIO.2 million (?NZ20.4 million) horse which never made it to a racecourse, has been retired to stud. A son of the renowned Northern Dancer, which won 18 of his 21 races and has since sired many classic winners, Snaafi Dancer was bought for a then world record price by Sheikh Mohammed Al-Maktoum, of Dubai, in 1983.
The good-looking three-year-old dark bay colt showed little aptitude for
racing while being trained and will now try to repair his damaged reputation at a stud farm in Ontario.
The English trainer, John Dunlop, said: “Snaafi Dancer was a handsome colt and a great walker. Unhappily, he wasn’t nearly so good when it came to running. Frankly, he couldn’t pick up his feet at the gallop. “It has happened before that a magnificently bred horse is fundamentally useless and no doubt it will happen again, but I hope not to me,” he said.
