Softball pair on equal terms
Countdown Burnside and Tait Electronics United will go into their crunch doubleheader this week-end on equal terms after both had wins in senior men’s softball games last evening. The double-header will decide which team will represent the province in the Pan Am club nationals in North Shore next February. Both sides now have 16 wins and two losses in the competition. United had by far the tougher game last evening, beating A.B.L. Suburbs, 1-0, at Western Park, in spite of being decisively outbatted by seven hits to two. Suburbs actually loaded up the bases in the top of the fifth innings after three consecutive batters at the bottom of the order, Bryan Mountford, Marty Grant and Kerry Chuck, strung together good hits. The paltry two hits managed by the United batters were achieved in the first two innings and the only run of the game did not come until the bottom of the fifth when the catcher, Tony Mountford, scored. At Papanui Domain Burnside had a rather easier time of it with a 5-0 shutout win over Imperial Merivale. Bumside’s top-of-the-order batter, Terry Butson, led the way with a triple and a double and crossed the home plate twice. Ray Marsh also hit safely on two occasions.
Pitching for Bumside Roger Keith struck out 10 of the 24 batters he faced while conceding only two hits, to Lionel Siberly and Chris Chapman.
