Footpaths
Sir,—l question the priorities of the Christchurch City Council with regard to the extravagant new plan for Victoria Square and the dangerous and unhealthy condition of our inner city footpaths. Aged people take their lives in their hands when forced to use them. The plan for Victoria Square will certainly be
an asset and most appropriate for the luxurious Parkroyal Hotel, the clientele of which will never meet the ratepayers who provide the luxury nor will they ever see the footpaths which the ratepayer is forced to use. Footpaths in Colombo, Manchester, Madras and Barbadoes Streets, Bealey Avenue, and Edgeware Road have the appearance of back street slums. These are only some of the streets requiring attention. Attention seems to be given only to the motorised traffic. Pedestrians seem to have no rights. I have been embarrassed and ashamed tb meet people from Singapore who have had to use our footpaths. — Yours, etc M. McKAY. December 16, 1985.
