Austrian downhill win

NZPA-AFP

Vai Gardena, Italy Peter Wirnsberger brought Austria its first men’s world cup alpine skiing win of the season when he won the downhill at Vai Gardena yesterday. Wirnsberger, third in the Vai d’lsere downhill last Saturday, finished ahead of Switzerland’s consistent Peter Muller, fourth a week ago, with Sepp Wildgruber,

of West Germany, third.

It was the fifth win of Wirnsberger’s World. Cup career. His only success last season came in the Wengen, Switzerland, downhill. Muller, the Olympic and world championship downhill runner-up, was 0.55 s down on Wirnsberger but second place still enabled him to take the over-all World Cup lead from Switzerland’s Karl Alpiger.
