Riders in high spirits

PA Palmerston North Showjumping gave way to E entertainment in the awatu Sports Stadium on Saturday as New Zealand’s top riders competed in a light-hearted event as cricketers, circus masters, Indians and pop-stars. The stars of the show were Torvill and Dean — or good imitations — as Waitotara’s Ann Wilson and Dannevirke’s Doug Isaacson went though the intricate manoeuvres of a baton relay. The Canterbury pairing of Dr Kill Anything, alias Richard Hampton, of Rakaia, and his comatose patient, Vicki Hanson, of Rangiora, were close runners-up. The more serious competitions of the second day of the three-day New Zealand Indoor Showjumping Championships produced wins for the West Australian visitor, David Dobson, on Ludo, Wellington’s Meg Mundell on Schmozzle, and Dannevirke’s Maurice Beatson on All Sorts. Results included: C-grade horse TAMS: Ludo, D. Dobson (Aust) 1; Park Royal, A. McNair (Levin) 2; Enterprise, A. McNair 3; Inishmore, M. Ridley (Invercargill) 4. A-grade pony TAMS: Schmozzle, M. Mundell (Wellington) 1; Shanana, R. Bremer (Patea) 2; Ballyhoo, C. McLeod (Martinborough) 3; Glanville Road, M. Cooper (Stratford) 4. B-grade horse TA2: All Sorts, M. Beatson (Dannevirke) 1, Broadway, H. Wilson (Waitotara) 2; Mr Impy, T. Rion (Takapau) 3; Compliment, C. Mclntosh (Taupo) 4.
