Market for meat improves

PA Wellington Demand for most meats improved slightly in Britain this week. The Christmas turkey is in fairly short supply and it is expected that beef will replace the traditional favourite in many cases. There has been a steady demand for New Zealand lamb, with continued interest from the main-line stockists preparing for the post-Christ-mas period. It is expected that there will be little or no interest in New Zealand lamb from the end of this week to the beginning of January because of the festive season.

On the Smithfield market, New Zealand PL grade lamb’ was quoted at 59 to 61p a lb ($NZ3.35 to $NZ3.46 a kg). Trading in United States imported manufacturing beef was firm at the beginning of the week but slipped towards the end. Australian and New Zealand beef prices fell, too. The average price for imported bull beef fell 1.5 c to SUSI.OI a lb c.i.f. ($NZ3.94 a kg), while the average price for cow-beef dropped 3c to 94c a lb cif (?NZ3.66 a kg).
