Approaching the Bealey Bridge in the upper Waimakariri valley one of the illustrations from the new pictorial essay “Discover Canterbury,” by Warren Jacobs and John Wilson, reviewed today. The book combines an historical and geographic assessment of the province with a collection of unexpected and diverting colour illustrations. Of this particular picture, it reminds travellers to Arthur’s Pass that the road was hacked out in the 1860s. but the bridge was not built until 1936.
