Election chop

The Porkchoppers. By Ross Thomas. Penguin, 1985. 204 pp. $7.95 (paperback). This is not a novel about special false teeth. As Ross Thomas tells the reader in a brief forword, a porkchopper is someone in the American labour, union movement who is motivated by selfinterest rather than the usual altruistic concerns that drive the remainder. This is the story of the fight for re-election of an ageing, alcoholic president of a very large union, and of the tantrum-throwing man who is trying to usurp him. It is a story of crime, graft and political manipulation, with everyone porkchopping like mad. It can be read with one eye tied behind one’s back, but does not match some of , Ross Thomas’s earlier efforts. Are they really called porkchoppers?--Ken Strongman. >
