Commuter airline
Sir, — Safe Air’s announcement of a decision to operate a commuter service can only be described as politically expedient. This continues the political patronage which Safe Air has enjoyed for some years. Mr 'Tannock’s “market opportunity” has existed for at least a decade. Why is Safe Air now taking advantage of this market? Two reasons exist: the end of the Bristol* operation leaves surplus staff, and Air New Zealand is permitting Safe Air to explore this “market opportunity,” avoiding redundancy and undermining the attempts of private enterprise commuter operators. Mr Prebble’s statement on employment continuity for pilots and staff of Safe Air hints at the political lobby in the decision. Are pilots a special group separate'"from staff? (fan Safe Air compete in this market without predatory financing or pricing? I doubt this. The consequences for private enterorise operators and the travelling public can only be bad. — Yours, etc.,
BRYAN COSTELLO. December 12, 1985.
