Stamp cover marks railway line anniversary
A commemorative stamp cover has been produced to mark the fortieth anniver- ! sary of the opening of the Picton to Christchurch rail- 5 way line on December 15, 1945. Z The cover will be postmarked at Picton, and atx the Christchurch Railway Post Office. <
Although work was started on the line last century, the last link in the
South Island Main Trunk was not completed' until early in December, 1945. A Vulcan railcar, RMS 6, on which the then Minister of Railways, Mr Robert Semple, travelled from Christchurch to Kaikoura for the opening celebrations, is now in working order at Ferrymead Historic Park. The railcar then took the Minister to Picton.
For many years, the pas-
senger trains on the line were hauled by Ab class steam locomotives. Later there were railcars, and then diesel locomotivehauled carriages. Now, powerful Df-class diesel-electric locomotives work on the line. Commemorative covers can be obtained at a cost of $3.50 each from Colin Dash, P.O. Box 5135, Christchurch 5.
