85,000 Goldair fans returned

About 85,000 Goldair fan heaters have been returned to P.D.L. Industries to have a second safety switch fitted. This is about 40 per cent of the total number to be recalled. The company has established temporary plants in Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Westport, Christchurch, and Dunedin to handle the heaters. It has also employed an additional 56 staff for the job. The Electricity Division of the Ministry of Energy ordered the recall in September, saying that all fan heaters should be fitted with safety switches. The managing director of P.D.L., Mr Don Sollitt, said the company’s main aim was to have the programme completed well ahead of the 1986 winter season.

“Our national advertising will continue through December and January to ensure that all owners are advised to modify their heaters before the 1986 winter,” he said. “All stock now held by retailers is being updated and the heaters being produced for the 1986 winter are manufactured to the latest New Zealand and Australian specifications.” The company has charged each owner $5 for cleaning a heater and adding the new switch.
