Acumen doped

NZPA-AAP Melbourne The leading trainer, Geoff Murphy, has been suspended for three months by stipendiary stewards over the doping of Acumen, the winner of The Moonee Valley Stakes on September 28. Following the suspension order, the Victorian Racing Club Committee granted an application by Murphy for a stay of proceedings pending the hearing of an appeal. After the running of the Moonee Valley Stakes, a urine sample from Acumen was found positive to the stimulant caffeine. This week’s sitting was the fifth by stewards inquiring into the circumstances of the dopevidence was heard from Murphy, the apprentice, Lance Gould, a former employee of Murphy’s, Valentine Nagle, and Efetective Senior Constable Jim Monaghan, of the police racing squad. The stewards’ panel headed by Pat Lalor charged Murphy and found him guilty of having run Acumen in the Moonee Valley Stakes when the horse was known to have had a drug administered to him. Murphy has more than 70 horses under his control at Caulfield.

A date for his appeal will be fixed for some time in January. . ■ ■
