Farmers’ views of new package

The Government’s economic statement contained nothing to ease the immediate social problems affecting the rural community, said Mr Michael Murchison, president of North Canterbury Federated Farmers. The changes announced in the package included some good points, but these would help the farming industry only in the long term. The Government had done nothing to help farmers now.

Mr Murchison said he would have liked the Government to exert some influence on the value of the New Zealand dollar. A drop in the dollar’s value would allow a lot more farmers to survive and ease pressure on manufacturers.

Exemptions to parts of the Income Tax Act, reductions on tariffs, and the removal of conditions on the livestock incentive scheme and the land development encouragement loans would be welcomed by farmers.

Mr Murchison said he welcomed the announcement of a review on industrial relations. Farmers wanted this area to become more flexible.
