Contract bridge

Sir,—l was delighted to read the article (December 3) “How con-' tract bridge began,” by J. R. Wignall. Harold Stirling Vanderbilt was a friend of mine, and was instrumental in facilitating my entry into the United States as a permanent resident. His house, Eastover, in Florida, with Lake Worth on one side and the ocean on the other was lovely, and as a young British female I met there many of the outstanding bridge experts of the time (1938-). “Mike” as we called Harold S. Vanderbilt, played contract bridge with his frequent guests, Waldemar Von Zedwitz, Jimmy Maier and Howard Schenken, all life masters. I also met his sister, Consuelo (former Duchess of Marlborough), she having married again to a French engineer by name Jacques Balsan. “Mike” Vanderbilt was a lieuten-ant-commander in the United States Navy during World War I. My husband and I are enjoying our holiday in your truly exquisite land very much indeed.—Yours, etc., JOYCE R. LYON. Ventura, California, December 4, 1985.
