Fate of pukekos

Sir,—Your correspondent, Colin Jamieson, shares Forest and Bird Society concern for the welfare of pukekos along Linwood Avenue roadsides. The society has been aware of the vulnerability of these interesting native rails for some

time and deplores the fact that as a result of widespread habitat loss, pukeko numbers are much reduced. In conjunction with the Combined Estuaries Association, we have for many years pressed for the preservation of pukeko habitat around the Heathcote-Avon Estuary. While the Christchurch Drainage Board’s farmlands provide good feeding habitat, breeding areas are restricted to drains on the farm and scattered flood-free wetlands on the estuary margins.. At present we are pressing the Christchurch City Council to protect the last piece of freshwater wetland adjacent to the estuary. The council has provided “Pukekos Crossing” signs on Linwood Avenue and Dyers Road, in response to requests by our society and the C.E.A.—Yours, etc.,

K. C. HARRISON, Honorary secretary, Canterbury branch, Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society. December 5, 1985.
