Duck rescue
Sir,—Stan Darling’s amusing story regarding the nesting duck in our fish pond (“Reporter’s Diary,” December 3), deserves some informed comment. We were aware that she came back several weeks ago and in view of her determina-
tion decided that we should let nature take its course. Although partly hidden from view, the nest has been watched with interest by many members. Advice was sought in advance of the most humane time to move the ducklings after birth and the Acclimatisation Society transferred the mother and her little darlings on Tuesday to the Greenpark Reserve. We have been assured this is a more suitable environment for the nurture and upbringing of young ducks. I am sure readers will agree we are not as hard-hearted as they may have been led to believe—Yours, etc.,
J. P. MORTON, President, St Albans-Shirley Club (Inc.). December 4, 1985.
