P.O. plans to replace tower at Cashmere
A 32m-high microwave transmitting tower may replace the present 18m one at Cashmere. The Post Office intends to replace the tower because it is not big enough for today’s needs. Three possible options were considered yesterday by the Heathcote County Council’s town-plan-ning committee.
Apart from the preferred option of the Post Office, the 32m tower, the present tower could also be replaced by three towers about 20m high or nine slimline towers varying between 18m and 21m. The committee favoured the three-tower option because they would be less obvious and could be disguised by trees. The present tower is only ju£ ; visible
above surrounding trees. The County Engineer, Mr D. J. May, said the council could not formally approve or disapprove of the Post Office plans,. as the land was designated for use as a telecommunications site, and no objection had been received.
The council will write to the Minister of Works asking that he amend the plan and change the Post Office’s proposal to the three-tower option. The Post Office also intends to extend the existing radio station building on Mount Pleasant. The committee recommended that the council approve a change of designation to the Mount Pleasant reserve to allow the alterations to go ahead.
“There would be no resr triction on public access or 1 recreation as it is a public i reserve,” said Mr May. i Bowenvale 1 Development and man- ’ agement plans for Bowenvale Park will be prepared by independent consultants, and should be completed by ’ the end of February. The plans will be on a conceptual level to allow public input, with detailed plans possibly asked for later. i The works and reserves committee has provided $ll,OOO for the preparation of plans. The committee has also provided $5OOO for fencing two areas .below Scott ; Reserve. / £ S
