Industrial action by some nurses averted

Industrial action by psychiatric and psycopaedic nurses was averted this week after a meeting with the Minister of Health, Dr Bassett.

Nurses at Sunnyside and Templeton hospitals voted earlier in the week to reject their pay offer and to take industrial action in a fortnight Their vote was similar to other psychiatric and psychopaedic nurses throughout New Zealand.

The nurses, who are members of the Public Ser-

vice Association, were made their award offer last Friday. The assistant general secretary of the P.&A., Mr Mike Coleman, said yesterday that a meeting with Dr Bassett was sought to discuss the offer. On the basis of that meeting, the industrial action was called off, he said. Negotiations were to begin some time next week. The threatened action centred on the lack of an offer to psychiatric assistants, he said.
