Drivers withdraw support
West Coast members of the Canterbury-Westland Drivers’ Union have voted to withdraw their affiliation to the Labour Party, after loyal support for about 36 years. The union’s president, Mr Fred Simmons, said the voting was 51 for and 81 against remaining affiliated, with two informal votes. Westport drivers were the strongest against affiliation, 47 of the 57 drivers voting to withdraw affiliation. Mr Simmons said the feeling coming from the meetings was that the Labour Party was not doing its utmost for the West Coast.
Westport drivers had their meeting yesterday, fresh with the news that the Government plans to withdraw its annual subsidy to the port of Westport. Another local issue upsetting Westport people is the plan by the Railways Corporation to withdraw bus services north of Westport.
