Assembly plant strike settled
PA Nelson Three hundred workers at the New Zealand Motor Corporation vehicle assembly plant at Stoke voted to return to work yesterday after the management removed suspensions imposed on Wednesday when they struck in support of a fellow worker.
The strike had erupted over a worker’s refusal to accept temporary work. Union officials led by the
secretary of the Wellingtonbased Coachworkers’ Union, Mr Graeme Clarke, and the Nelson union’s president, Mr Lionel Skillicom, met the management at 8 a.m. yesterday. The return was welcomed by the plant manager, Mr Roger Harding. “We have a very good track record here and we genuinely lean over backwards to try to keep staff happy,” he said.
