Plans to turn off lights
NZPA-AAP Sydney If residents of Sydney are not looking into the sky, they may be stumbling about in the dark for four or five nights next year if the State Government goes ahead with a plan to turn off street lights so that people can see Halley’s Comet.
The New South Wales Planning and Environment Minister, Mr Bob Carr, has suggested the 20-minute blackouts for March or April, when the comet will be most visible.
As well as turning off street lights, Mr Carr proposed asking for advertising lights to be turned off. The Premier, Mr Wran, is considering the idea.
