Annual ‘dose’ of fraud ...

The festive season will bring its annual dose of fraud, the Christchurch police warned yesterday. Retailers are expected to subsidise criminals by more than $BO,OOO in the next three weeks. That was the amount of fraudulent cheques expected to be passed in Christchurch before Christmas Day, said the head of the fraud squad, Detective Senior-Sergeant Alan Dalzell.

He urged the public not to leave cheque books unattended in cars and to ensure that cheque books were kept separate from identification, such as credit cards. Retailers should also warn their staff about the problem of stolen cheques. They should make sure that persons writing cheques

could produce identification. Banks and retailers often had to cover losses incurred by fraudulent cheques as the Court seldom ordered compensation, he said. Detective Senior-Sergeant Dalzell said that seven cheque books had been reported stolen to the police already this month. Experience indicated that many more would be reported stolen by Christmas Day.

The fraudulent use* of credit cards was also a big problem. The police did not have the full figures because the banks did not always report thefts.

Bank cards which carried a photograph of the user were not a problem, said Detective SeniorSergeant Dalzell.
