Road-closing moves to begin
Steps will be taken to close part of Hazeldean Road so that the P.D.L. factory can expand across the road.
The company wants to use Railways Corporation land across the road from its factory to build on. It has asked the Christchurch City Council to close part of Hazeldean Road and sell it. The council conducted a traffic survey, and the results were reported last month. The council’s town-plan-ning committee then decided that as there was no serious disadvantage for traffic in closing the street, procedures should begin. It also sought neighbours’ views on the proposal. A leaflet asked residents for their opinions. Only two responses were received. One was from the Addington Neighbourhood Group, which reiterated its opposition to the stopping. The other was from a person concerned about P.D.L. traf-
fic using Harman Street. The works and traffic committee yesterday decided to take steps to close the road, which will take some time. Public notification of the stopping allows for public submissions to the Planning Tribunal. There would be ample time to collate further responses from residents, said the City Engineer, Mr John Ince.
A public meeting, organised by P.D.L., is planned for the New Year.
The committee passed three recommendations on procedures, parking spaces, and access to the developed site.
Cr Alex Clark said that the council should not close the road. He said that it could be used for parking associated with Hagley Park.
The council could buy the Railways land and develop it as a park for cars using the park, he said. A motion seeking this was lost.
