Historic cricket series win

New Zealand passed another milestone on its cricket career when it beat Australia by six wickets in the third and final test of the 1985 series in Perth yesterday. The victory ensured New Zealand its first series win over Australia. Previously, it had shared series with its closest international opponent, both times in New Zealand, in 1974 and 1982.

New Zealand has now recorded twenty-three test wins, and four over Australia. Only two players have played for New Zealand in all fbur victories: the present captain, Jeremy Coney, and the outstanding all-rounder, Richard Hadlee. Hadlee has played a significant hand in all four wins, taking a total of 40 wickets in those matches. His 11 wickets in the Perth test capped his stunning series performance. They lifted his tally of wickets in the series to 33, and his over-all test tally to 299. An elite band of five men have taken 300 test wickets: Fred Trueman, Bob Willis, and lan Botham, of England; Dennis Lillee, of Australia; and Lance Gibbs, of the West Indies.

Hadlee will get his chance to join the illustrious group when New Zealand meets Australia in the first test of next year’s series, in Wellington, starting on February 21. Match report, back page
