A.I.D.S., kisses link

NZPA-AAP Sydney The A.I.D.S. virus could be transmitted through deep, passionate kissing, according to the head of the National A.LD.S. Task Force, Professor David Penington.

The “Australian” newspaper reported that Professor Penington had confirmed there was a risk of spread through deep, prolonged kissing, particularly if both partners had bleeding gums. However, all evidence indicated the spread of the infection from one person to another required a large amount of the virus.

“It was important to note that A.I.D.S. could not be transmitted through ordinary kissing, sneezing, swimming pools, cutlery, crockery, drinks or normal social contact,” the report said. Professor Penington also warned that saunas could be a potentially serious means of spreading A.I.D.S. if health checks and precautions were not enforced.

“There is a major potential for the spread of the disease with male homosexual prostitutes, and it is very important these people be checked for infection," he said in the report.
