Crewman in sea for an hour

Greymouth reporter A fisherman swam in the sea off Greymouth, still clad in heavy work clothes, for an hour yesterday morning after falling overboard from the trawler Souvenir as it crossed the harbour bar.

Kerry Fawcett, aged 18, was washed overboard about 4.30 a.m. An immediate search of the area by fellow crew members was unsuccessful and the police were advised. A jet boat and two other fishing vessels joined the search within 30 minutes.

Mr Fawcett was finally sighted about a mile off the tiphead about 5.30 a.m. He was still swimming, although clad in a heavy workshirt and dungarees. He was rescued by the Souvenir and taken to Grey Hospital where he was examined and discharged.
