Pukekos

Sir, — When driving to work this morning two things came to my attention. One was the rampant pukekos on the motif of a Christchurch City Council truck; and, second, the absence of pukekos from the roadside of Linwood Avenue. We are fortunate to live in Heathcote where pukekos are often seen in the Ferrymead area. Perhaps it is a seasonal factor which takes them out of sight at present. They are, however, a significant part of the Christchurch City Coat of Arms (appropriately so, recognising that Christchurch was a swamp area), and I am wondering if the City Council, the Wildlife Service and the ornithological societies are doing anything, not only to protect them in the city but to encourage their presence. — Yours, etc., COLIN JAMIESON.
