Union membership
Sir, — I was absolutely astounded by a sentence in your editorial of November 26. The sentence was, “Mr McLay has yet to show how voluntary unionism could be made to work.” I am sure 90 per cent of New Zealanders already know quite well how voluntary unionism can be made to work. That is, simply abolish compulsory unionism and let people go about their union membership decisionmaking unhindered. Voluntary unionism works perfectly well in every other Western country. Why should we be different? Compulsory unionism is tyrannical and economically disastrous as the editor of “The Press” should know from very recent experience. It appals me that a newspaper, supposedly a guardian of freedom, should call on a politician to justify his efforts to restore freedom of choice. — Yours, etc., T. R. LOUDON. Kaiapoi, November 27, 1985.
