Bomb explodes before amnesty

NZPA-Reuter Noumea A bomb destroyed Noumea’s court building yesterday in what the police called the biggest attack of its kind in New Caledonia. No-one was hurt in the blast before dawn which demolished the walls of the building and sent its tin roof flying more than 200 metres. The bomb exploded only hours before the French National Assembly passed a bill to grant amnesty for certain crimes committed in the turbulent Pacific territory before elections last September for four regional

assemblies. The Minister for the Interior, Mr Pierre Joxe, said in Paris that the amnesty was for acts of political violence over the last year between groups for and against independence. It excluded manslaughter and offences against security forces. No immediate claim of responsibility was made for the blast but Mr Joxe said the police had found leaflets on the scene which called for the release of a group charged with the murder of 10 indigenous Melanesian Kanaks in December, 1984.
