Hockey Assn unable to fill committee
For the second time in three years the Canterbury Hockey Association has had to adjourn its annual meeting because it could not fill the vacancies on its management committee. The president, Mr John Morse, adjourned the meeting moments after a 15-minute break had been called to allow delegates to discuss possible nominations. After the break
no names were forthcoming. Mr Morse said after the adjournment that a week ago he had heard the names of about 15 people willing to stand for the committee. “But only three of them were here tonight.” Before the delegates left the meeting Mr Morse added one note of warning. “This is the second time I have had to take this action in two years. If the four positions
on the management committee are not filled when the meeting is reconvened (five nominations were received at the meeting) the first thing you will have is my resignation.” The meeting was adjourned to a date in January, to be decided. Earlier, Mr Gary Steele told delegates that the association would look silly if it had to
adjourn the meeting and then try to convince people that it could manage a $500,000 facility at Porritt Park and raise a six-figure sum of money. He was referring to the artificial surface which the association hopes to lay and manage in conjunction with the Canterbury Women’s Hockey Association. The field is planned to be in use by late next year.
