Skellerup footwear work to resume

Footwear workers at Skellerup Footwear in Woolston who were suspended yesterday will resume work today, after talks between the company and the Canterbury Trades Council yesterday. More than 130 footwear workers of the 330 at the factory who make Skellerup footwear were suspended yesterday because no raw materials were available, as a result of a black ban.

The vice-president of the council, Mr Dick Lowe, said last evening that non-rubber goods would be allowed into the factory. Suspensions would be lifted and normal work resume by footwear workers today, he said. Canterbury rubber workers have been on strike since November 21 over the breakdown in the Canterbury collective agreement talks. They have imposed black bans on the movement of materials and finished goods into and out of the rubber factories.
