Rugby contenders
Andy Holland, the very successful coach of the Canterbury B rugby team in recent years, is making a bid for higher honours. Mr Holland is one of four nominations for this year’s South Island selection panel. He is joined by the former Marlborough captain, Ray Sutherland, as challengers to the sitting pair, Alistair Tait (Southland) and Neville Goodwin (Mid-Canterbury). Another prominent Canterbury rugby identity trying his luck in a national ballot is the former All Black prop, Bill Bush. He has been nominated for the New Zealand Maoris panel, and for the Maoris
southern zone panel, in both cases two men being required. In both contests, Mr Bush will be opposed by another Canterbury candidate, Ruk Wainohu, who is seeking reelection as the southern zone convener. Dave Pirie, who has been selecting Canterbury lower grade teams for a number of years, is one of the four nominations for the South Island under-18 panel, and Jerry Rowberry is again available for the under-16 panel, of which he was the convener last winter. The elections will be held at the New Zealand Rugby Football Union council meeting on Friday.
