More success for bowls pair

The Linwood bowlers, Sonny Calder and Ken Watson, added to their impressive list of achievements in recent years when they won the final of the United Classic Pairs Tournament on the Barrington green yesterday. For their efforts they collected more than $2OOO worth of prizes, including a trip to the rich MacLeay Duff Invitation Pairs in Auckland later in the season. In the final, Calder and Watson met the Dallington combination of Kevin McDonald and lan McAllister. The Linwood pair looked certain to justify their favouritism when they raced to an 11-0 lead after only six ends, but then Calder’s leading slipped and McAllister was back in the game at 139 after fourteen ends. However, Calder regained his touch, and with Watson showing glimpses of his brilliant form of earlier in the day, there was never much chance of Linwood losing the lead. The final score was 18-12. In the semi-finals, Watson met the ultra-consistent Morris Nairn (Leeston), whose lead was Graham Mills. Nairn scored a five on the first end and picked up a four on the ninth. But Watson took all the others, and by the thirteenth end he was safe, at 22-9. McAllister was a little lucky in the quarter-finals. He needed a five on the last end to beat Peter Jarvis (Beckenham), and got it after a drive worked perfectly for him. In the semi-finals, too, McAllister survived in a tight finish, scoring a single on the last end to beat

Neville Poole (Sumner), who had Lance Main as his lead, 13-12. Despite more overnight rain the tournament resumed on time yesterday and both the Barrington and United greens (the consolation events were played at . the latter) ran freely enough. This added to the surprise that the centre should postpone, because of the weather, the final rounds today of its open singles. Play in this event is at the quarter-finals stage and a date has to be set for the last three rounds. It can’t be next week because of the Canterbury Countrywide singles tournament. Results of the United pairs, which carried $7OOO worth of prizes, were: Championship quarterfinals.— K. Watson (Linwood), 17, V. Triggs (Riccarton W.M.C.) 15; M. Nairn (Leeston) 20, T.
