Mr J. C. Edmunds

PA Auckland John Charles (Jack) Edmunds, the owner-trainer of the fine jumpers Hunting Mac and Rare Fox, died at Clevedon this week, aged 80. Among Hunting Mac’s many wins were the 1947 Great Northern Hurdles and 1949 Grand National Hurdles at the age of 11. Rare Fox was a fast horse on the flat but his form was mainly disappointing. Mr Edmunds put him

over fences and the Brer Fox horse won six hurdles races, establishing a New Zealand and Australian record of 3min 33s for two miles in the New Year Hurdles at Ellerslie in 1953 with 11 stone 8 pound on his back. In later years Mr Edmunds dabbled in lightharness racing. He raced the pacer, Southern Silver, which won five of his six starts as a four-year-old. Mr Edmunds is survived by a son and a daughter.
