AUSTRALIA BHP gain helps hold up prices

NZPA Sydney Australian shares closed slightly easier yesterday after negative information from overseas markets and lack of confidence in gold stocks, dealers said. Gains by BHP pulled the market up with the purchase of around 10 million shares by Bell chief, Robert Holmes aCourt, in an op-tions-related deal bolstering turnover. By the close of trading

the all ordinaries index fell 1.4 points to 986.8, the all industrials index 4.9 points to 1457.4, the all resources index rose 1.1 points to 623.5. The gold index fell 10.1 points to 926.8. Turnover was 58.73 M shares, worth SI79M, with falls outnumbering rises 264 to 155. Market leader BHP was at the centre of action with 14M shares traded. It finished 16c up at 842 c. Among

other market leaders, CSR fell 2c to 348 c, MIM 3c to 242 c, CRA 4c to 532 c and Western Mining 10c to 312 c. Bell Resources remained steady at 480 c as did, North Broken HUI at 220 c. Peko gained 6c to 516 c. Among the miners, 5c cuts took Comalco to 160, Sons of Gwalia to 335 c and Poseidon to 345 c. GMK fell 10c to 980 c, Kidston 12c to 552 c and Central Norseman 14c to 686 c.

Niugini mining added 30c to 230 c, and Bougainville 2c to 182 c, Renison, Metana and Emperor remained steady at 520 c, 290 c and 300, respectively Santos lost 4c to 542 c.
