Angelo Hill due this week-end

The former Exchequer Saints (Wellington) forward, Angelo Hill, will arrive in Christchurch at the week-end to take up his contract with the Converse Canterbury Countrywide league men’s basketball team for next season. Hill was one of the Saints’ outstanding players last season, but was surprisingly dropped after the league finals in August. Hill replaces a fellow American, Eddie McLeod, who played for Canterbury last season before moving to the Continent when there was some doubt about this contract being renewed. The Canterbury Basketball Association has entered a team in next season’s national second division men’s league competition. The president, Mr Peter Crowhen, said yesterday that the $250 entry fee had been paid, but that it was not yet certain if a team will play. “It depends on the views at the annual meeting on December 12,” said Mr Crowhen, who will again stand for the presidency. “Also, we are looking for a sponsor.” The annual meeting of the New Zealand Basketball Federation will be held in Wellington next Friday, Saturday and Sunday. One of the more contentious issues will be the application of Centrals (Wellington) to play in the national senior men’s league competition. After a series of promotionrelegation matches late last season, Centrals was dropped to the second division, but since then the club has found a “flaw” in the federation’s constitution which gives the Wellington region the right to have two teams in the first division. However Central’s bid for reinstatement could be foiled if the federation chooses to apply another rule which gives the governing body discretionary powers in accepting teams into the league.
