Peterson back in team
One of New Zealand's foremost long and triple jumpers, Evan Peterson, has been included in the Canterbury track and field team for the'annual triangular contest against Otago and Southland at Dunedin on December 14. Peterson, back in Christchurch after nearly three years based in Hamilton, has been fighting for fitness after suffering a foot injury at the beginning of the season. Because of this, he will not contest the triple jump. His programme, nevertheless, will be considerable. He will contest the 100 m, 200 m, the 4 x 100 m relay and the long jump.
The team, a relatively small one of 36 athletes, should have a good chance of winning the contest, but it is not as strong as was expected. The Queen Elizabeth II Park track is being repaired and this meeting presented an ideal opportunity for athletes to get some top competition on a good rubber surface. Not all of the province’s top athletes have seen it in this way. Peter Henry, a leading decathlon specialist, has been named captain of the men’s section. Lyn Osmers, the New Zealand javelin champion, will lead the women’s section, and Stephen Muir will captain the junior men.
