Role for Armed Forces
PA Wellington New Zealand’s Armed Forces will take more prominence in the security of the South Pacific, says the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Palmer. The Forces would do more surveillance, training, and exercises, Mr Palmer has told the Diplomatic Corps in Wellington.
They would be active in helping with fisheries protection, hydrography, preventive medicine, civil engineering, natural disasters, and communications. The level of activity was in the interests of New Zealand and Australia, and also of Island countries. It was also important for more distant States because
they could see this as a contribution to stability, Mr Palmer said. "He do not want to see the region become a battleground for ideology or strategic power struggles. Neither should others.” Nor should the region be subject to outside interference that it neither wanted or needed, he said.
