Penguins mauled by dog
PA Wellington Wellington City Council workers found the mangled remains of a. dozen little blue penguins, including recently hatched chicks, near Shelly Bay R.N.Z.A.F. base on Monday morning. The penguins had been mauled by a dog and were strewn over an area of a few hundred metres round the base. A Wildlife Service officer, Mr Richard Anderson, said yesterday that penguins were regular visitors to the Wellington coastline at this time of year, coming ashore in September or October to lay their eggs, often under houses and sheds. They were helpless targets for uncontrolled dogs, especially when they had young chicks to protect, Mr Anderson said.
