Seminars on discipline
PA Auckland School principals in Auckland and Whangarei will attend seminars this week on how to discipline pupils without using corporal punishment The seminars would be the first in a series throughout New Zealand since the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, approved efforts to banish the cane and strap from all schools. The Auckland Education
Board’s district senior inspector, Mr Ash Newth, said that although invitations were sent to all principals, attendance at the seminars would be voluntary. The seminars would examine other ways to punish and discipline pupils. Guidelines would be drawn up and educational psychologists would present papers on the benefits on nonviolent discipline, he said.
