Garden City Guides back on streets soon

Christchurch’s Garden City Guides will be back on the streets later this month. Twelve new guides will begin training on Monday on a new Labour Depart-ment-sponsored scheme which will continue the Garden City Guide theme. The Christchurch City Council’s parking superintendent, Mr Geoff Stevenson, said yesterday that the department had approved a further Garden City Guides project for six months. The emphasis of the project would be on poster abatement, he said. The new guides will begin

work on November 26, staffing the five information booths that the previous guides used in the central city and in New Brighton. Mr Stevenson said the Labour Department had been generous in approving the new project. The first Garden City Guides project gr six months) had contented on awareness of parking restrictions in the then new City Mall; the second (for 12 months) concentrated on litter. As well as providing an information service, the new guides would discourage the indiscrimi-

nate pasting-up of posters in the city. They would discuss with businesses the use of walls as "official" poster areas.

The guides’ supervisor will be Mrs Marie Ellis, who was supervisor for part of the last guides project The third guides project will be jointly administered by the council’s car-parking division and health department. The poster abatement project was initiated by the City health department as part of the Civic Pride campaign. The project is due to end on May 16, 1986.
