Polytechnic’s organic horticulture starts
One of the most exciting ventures the Christchurch Polytechnic has developed for some time began yesterday, the polytechnic’s council was told last evening. It was the polytechnic’s new 20-week course in organic horticulture under a tutor who had done similar work in South America, said an associate director, Mr Dave Kerr. The course would be run ■ as a young persons training course in conjuction with the Labour Department. It would establish model gar-
dens which could be of educational interest to primary and secondary school pupils. Resignation After two years at the polytechnic Mr Kerr is resigimng at the end of the year to become principal of Southland Community College. Although the council wished him well, there was some concern expressed about the high turnover of staff at the polytechic.
Youth jobs Mr Peter Kirby, who chaired the Committee of Inquiry in labour market programmes for the Australian Government earlier this Swill speak at the polyc on Monday about the opportunities for youth in the labour market of the future. . ■ Mr Kerr said that Mr Kirby had been almost solely responsible for all the material produced for the Australian Government about youth training.
